The massive Statue of Liberty, designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, was officially unveiled on October 28, 1886, in the United States. A gift from the French people commemorating the alliance between the two countries during the American Revolution. The statue has a total height of 305 feet, including the pedestal, which is another 154 feet tall. Its right hand holds a magnificent torch representing enlightenment, while its left hand holds a tablet with the date of the United States Declaration of Independence in Roman numerals: JULY IV, MDCCLXXVI (July 4, 1776). It is one of the most visited landmarks in the United States, attracting millions of tourists each year to admire its colossal copper statue, and its location can be found on the map further down the page. The Statue of Liberty, officially known as "Liberty Enlightening the World," was designated a National Monument in 1924, and Ellis Island in 1965. Both Liberty Island and Ellis Island were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. In 1984, the Statue of Liberty was included to UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites.
